The History of De Chao Chom Resort
On a relaxing summer afternoon, 89-year-old Grandma Lam Yai recounted a story about a place she had visited.
Just a few hundred meters from the Klai Kangwon (Worry-Free) Summer Palace, stood two houses designed in a Thai colonial style. The smaller one was named Luk Mai, while the other was named Metha.
These two houses were once the summer residence of Queen Maha Raj (Queen Mother) Mahod, the mother of Admiral Abhikara Kiativongse, or Prince Chumphon, better known to Thais as Sadet Tia. He is revered as the Father of the Royal Thai Navy, and is highly respected by Thai naval officers and villagers alike.
Prince Chumphon was one of the first princes to study abroad. He spent six years studying naval welfare in England. Upon his return, he served in the Siamese Navy and played a crucial role in its advancement and modernization. He also studied medicine and provided Western medical care to people of all classes, earning him the nickname "Doctor Phon." People believed he possessed magical and supernatural powers for healing illnesses.
In his childhood, he and Queen Mahod... Her Majesty the Queen frequently resided at Hua Hin Palace.
Upon completion, the original Lukmai Palace was transported by ship from Thewet Palace in Bangkok, while the Metha Palace was built later. Queen Mod loved the beautiful white sandy beaches of Hua Hin and visited at least once a month. She also brought along her favorite chef, Mae Thip.
